Kajiado county assembly has
lifted the ban on land transactions a day after the House adopted a new land
policy. The plan will guide the assembly in drafting a Land Bill to manage land
resources.
The motion was introduced by
Lands Committee chairman Joseph Mutunkei (Ildamat) and was passed unanimously
on Wednesday. MCAs said the ban hurt the economy.
“Investors are crying all
over the county, children cannot inherit land legally from their parents and
conmen have taken advantage of innocent people,” said minority leader Justus
Ngossor (Ewuaso).
The ban that was to last
three months stretched into one-and-a-half years. “It is high time we lift this
ban to bring normalcy to the land transactions and request the county executive
to implement it,” said Mutunkei.
Ngossor said the suspension
of land transactions inconvenienced residents and investors. The MCAs said
after Governor David Nkedianye imposed the ban, land cartels colluded with
deputy county commissioners and land registrars to create a unique land board, which
disregarded the ban.
MCA Timothy Sayiore (Imaroro)
opposed the motion. He had harsh words for the house and was forced to leave by
deputy speaker George Sunkuyia. Sayiore said the house is to blame for the
delay in handling land problems. “If it took more than one year for this
assembly to see the real mess it created, then we are all doomed,” he said.
